Introduction: Expiratory flow increase is a maneuver of respiratory physical therapy that promotes flow direction to the upper airways however, when applied in newborns, it may result in changes of thoracoabdominal mobility. Objective: To evaluate the thoracoabdominal mobility by photogrammetry in newborns after expiratory flow increase technique. Methods: Experimental blind study performed with newborns in supine position on a support table with upper limbs flexed, abducted and externally rotated and hip flexed at 110°. Adhesive markers were allocated for geometric delimitation of the thoracoabdominal compartment and expiratory flow increase technique was performed for 5 minutes with the therapist's hands on the thorax and abdomen. Newborns were filmed before and after the maneuver and the frames were analyzed in AutoCAD ® software by a blinded investigator at the time of the procedure. The largest and the smallest thoracoabdominal area were expressed in cm 2 and the mean values were compared between two moments (pre and post maneuver) by paired t test. Results: Twenty newborns with a mean age of 39 weeks were included. Before the maneuver, thoracoabdominal area was 56.1 cm 2 during expiration and 59.7 cm 2 during inspiration, and after the maneuver the value was 56.2 cm 2 during expiration and 59.8 cm 2 during inspiration,

Introdução: O suporte ventilatório em neonatologia tem se apresentado como peça quase fundamental ao suporte à vida. Entretanto, quando utilizado em prematuros, deve ser monitorador devido às complicações do estresse oxidativo. Objetivo: Levando em consideração a importância do assunto em neonatologia, este trabalho tem o objetivo de apontar as peculiaridades e necessidade do suporte ventilatório em neonatologia, as causas do estresse oxidativo em prematuros e suas complicações. Materiais e métodos: Para tanto, foi realizado uma revisão integrativa da literatura, por meio da Biblioteca Virtual de Saúde, nas bases de dados SciELO, LILACS, MedLine e PubMed, utilizando os seguintes descritores: suporte ventilatório interativo, oxidação, neonatologia e fatores de risco, com seus respectivos em inglês, entre os meses de abril e setembro de 2015. Resultados: Pode-se perceber que o suporte ventilatório em neonatologia é peça fundamental para a sobrevivência de prematuros em estado grave, e que é necessário todo o rigor na administração do oxigênio, devido às complicações que o estresse oxidativo pode promover. Por fim, é necessária a constante atualização sobre o tema em questão por meio de estudos com um maior controle possível, devido às peculiaridades do público tratado.Palavras-chave: Suporte ventilatório interativo; neonatologia; oxidação; fatores de risco. Introduction:The ventilator support in neonatology has been an almost fundamental piece to life support. However, when used in premature babies, it should be monitored due to the complications of oxidative stress. Objective: Taking into consideration the importance of the subject in neonatology, the present work has the objective of pointing the peculiarities and need of the support ventilator in neonatology, the causes of the oxidative stress in premature babies and its complications. Materials and methods: For such, a integrative revision of the literature was made, through online health libraries, in the SciELO, LILACS, MedLine and PubMed databases, using the following descriptors: interactive ventilatory support, oxidation, neonatology and risk factors, between April and September 2015. Results:We reached the conclusion that the ventilator support in neonatology is fundamental to the survival of premature babies in severe conditions, and that strictness in the administration of the oxygen is necessary, due to the complications that the oxidative stress can promote. Finally, the constant updating of the discussed theme it is also necessary, through carefully and controlled studies, giving the peculiarities of the subjects. Introduction: Neonatal respiratory physicaltherapy plays an important role in prevention and treatment of respiratory pathologies. In preterm neonates, immaturity of respiratory system can let development of various respiratory diseases. Meanwhile, it is discussed if respiratory physiotherapy can cause pain. Objective: Investigate presence of pain in neonates undergone to respiratory physiotherapy by a systematic review. Methods: Scienti ic search in electronic databases: Medline, Lilacs, Bireme, PEDro, Pubmed, Scielo and Capes thesis and dissertations base. Portuguese, English and Spanish, publication year from 2000 to 2012. Results: Thriteen studies were included, but one of them was excluded due to fulltext unavaiable. Therefore, twelve articles were included, nine (81,8%) con irm pain in newborn (NB), from these, in eight (72,7%) intervention was suction and in only one vibrocompression. Four articles studied term and premature newborns. Mechanical ventilatory assistance was used in seven of the studies analyzed. Conclusion: Results suggest that suction and vibrocompression were pain causers in NB. However, evidenced the necessity of well delineated methods to evaluate if physicaltherapy techniques can cause pain in neonates.
