Mesenchytraeus asymmetriauritus,a new enchytraeid (Annelida, Clitellata) from northeastern China

Abstract: Abstract.-A new enchytraeid species, Mesenchytraeus asymmetriauritus sp. nov., collected from terrestrial habitats of Changbai Mountain in the northeast China, is described. It is characterized by the dorsal vessel originating in XV-XVII, four pairs of preclitellar nephridia in 6/7-9/10, spermathecae attached to oesophagus in segment V and each possessing three or four ear-shaped diverticula of different size, one pair of asymmetrical sperm sacs occupying X-XVII and containing bulk of naked sperm bundles, atri… Show more

“…Changbai Mountain is the highest mountain in northwest China and one of the best-conserved mountainous ecosystems on Earth (Jiang et al, 2019;Lian et al, 2011). As the temperate representative upland forest ecosystem in China, it has high enchytraeid diversity with endemism, especially Mesenchytraeus, making it an ideal arena to explore enchytraeid-related scientific issues including taxonomy and systematics (Chen & Xie, 2015;Shen et al, 2011Shen et al, , 2012aShen et al, , 2012bZhang et al, 2018). Here, we used an integrative approach for the first time to explore Mesenchytraeus species from Changbai Mountain.…”

“…A series of field samplings were carried out from 2011 to 2020 on the northern slope of Changbai Mountain. The type locality of reported endemic Mesenchytraeus species can be found in the previous studies (Chen & Xie, 2015;Shen et al, 2011Shen et al, , 2012aShen et al, , 2012bZhang et al, 2018). The sampling sites of the specimens used in the study are as shown (Figure 1), there are four habitat types according to forest types: hardwood forest (S1, S2, P1), mixed forest (S3, S5, S6), spruce-fir forest (S7-S10, P2), and birch forest (S4).…”

“…Mesenchytraeus Eisen, 1878 is one of the species‐rich genera in Enchytraeidae, with 84 valid species recorded so far, accounting for ca. 11% of species in the family (Chen et al., 2016; Chen & Xie, 2015; Dózsa‐Farkas et al., 2015, 2018, 2022; Felföldi et al., 2020; Schmelz & Collado, 2012; Zhang et al., 2018). Mesenchytraeus is only found in the Holarctic, occurring mostly in habitats with cold, humid, and humus‐rich conditions (Christensen & Dózsa‐Farkas, 1999; Rota & Brinkhurst, 2000).…”
