In situ synthesis and nonlinear optical properties of Au:Ag nanocomposite polymer films

Abstract: We report a simple in situ synthesis procedure for Au:Ag nanocomposite polymer (NCP) films using polyvinyl alcohol as the reducing agent. Optical measurements show absorption bands of varying strengths around 530 and 410 nm. The presence of nanoparticles is confirmed from Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Nonlinear optical response is studied using 7 ns laser pulses, for near-resonant and off-resonant excitation wavelengths (532 and 1064 nm, respectively). Samples exhibit saturable as well as induced abs… Show more

“…The experimental data fits well to the corresponding nonlinear transmission equation, given by The non linear absorption coefficient is higher in the coreshell nanoparticles as compared to uncoated nanoparticles, in confirmation with a previous report [15]. The three photon absorption data fitted well with the experimental curves, indicating that three-photon absorption is the basic mechanism of optical limiting.…”

“…The nonlinear absorption coefficient increases substantially in the nanocomposites, as compared to pure ZnO and Ag colloids. It is reported that the nonlinear absorption coefficient increases in the bimetallic and core-shell nanocomposites, as compared to pure metals [23].…”

“…The switch over from saturable absorption to reverse saturable absorption is an interesting effect that can be utilized for optical switching, optical pulse compression and laser pulse narrowing. The change over in sign of the non-linearity is related to the interplay of exciton band bleach and optical limiting mechanisms [100].In semiconductors, RSA results mainly due to the nonlinear mechanisms such as two-photon absorption (TPA), free-carrier absorption (FCA), nonlinear scattering or a combination of these processes [95,101]. In semiconductors, two-photon absorption is allowedwhen the incident light source energy is less than the direct band gap energy Eg, but greater than Eg/2.…”
