Hypolipidemic effect of Irvingia gabonensis fruits juice on sodium fluoride induced dyslipidemia in rats

Abstract: Effect of Irvingia gabonensis fruit juice administration on serum lipid profile of sodium fluoride (NaF)-intoxicated rats was investigated. Twenty-four (24) male Wistar rats divided into four groups of six (6) animals each -one control and three intoxicated groups were used. The normal control (NC) group received only standard pelletized diet and water. All three intoxicated groups received 20 mgkg -1 bodyweight of NaF daily by gavage for 35 days. While the first group (NaFC group) received only NaF, the secon… Show more

“…Furthermore, polyphenolic compounds, flavonoids inclusive identified in our study, are known antioxidants that prevent the oxidative stress resulting from inflammatory processes [27][28][29][30]. They are also beneficial antimicrobial, antiulcer, antiviral agents [31], in addition, their tumor suppressing and hepatoprotective effect have been reported [1,32]. The scavenging activity of flavonoids have been reported to be in the order: myricetin > quercetin > rhamnetin > morin > diosmetin > naringenin > apigenin > catechin > 5,7-dihydroxy-3',4',5'trimethoxyflavone > robinin > kaempferol > flavone [33].…”

“…Plants have been identified as important source of phyto-active compounds with verifiable medicinal properties and nutraceutical benefits [1,2] Medicinal plants are applied in herbal-based medication for therapeutic, healing or alleviation of diseases in humans [3]. It is estimated that 80% of Asians and Africans living in rural communities depend on herbal medicine for their primary healthcare [4].…”

“…Use of some of this wild fruits can do much to combat malnutrition and sustain life. It has been established that I. gabonensis contains elemental micronutrients and we had observed a hypolipidemic effect of the fruit juice on sodium fluoride induced dyslipidemia in rats [12].…”

“…Hence the increase in total cholesterol observed in our study is believed to be as a result of increased HDL-cholesterol synthesis. Lipid profile studies were not carried out in this study to ascertain the exact cholesterol lipoprotein that was increased, but we had earlier observed a hypolipidemic effect of the fruit juice on sodium fluoride induced dyslipidemia in rats, as a result of increased HDL-C synthesis [12].…”

“…Hence, the search for an ideal anti-ulcer drug continues and has also been extended to medicinal plants/herbs in search of new and novel molecules, which may afford better protection and decrease the incidence of relapse. Plants have been identified as an important source of phytoactive compounds with verifiable medicinal properties and protective potential against toxicity" [15].…”
