The quality of spring water in the Higher Himalaya of Helambu area, Sindhupalchok district, Central Nepal was carried out. A total of fifty seven springs were surveyed to study different physical and chemical parameters, i.e. electric conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), potential of hydrogen (pH), dissolved oxygen (DO) and temperature. Among them, six springs were tested for chemical parameters. The results show that the distribution of EC and TDS is greater towards the lower elevation i.e. southern part near the settlement and agricultural land with the value ranging from 13 – 219 µS/cm and 7.08 – 161 mg/l respectively. The distribution of pH is inconsistent with the elevation and ranges from 2.27 – 6.66 throughout the area. The distribution of DO is greater at the central region and towards the lower elevation with the value ranging from 2.77 – 6.33 mg/l. The temperature ranges from 12.4 – 22.8 oC and increases with a decrease in the elevation. All the physiochemical parameters, except for pH, lies within the permissible range given by National Drinking Water Quality Standards (NDWQS, 2005) and World Health Organization (WHO) (2004) standards. The Water Quality Index (WQI) shows that overall area has excellent to good water quality in terms of drinkability, agricultural and industrial purposes. However, increasing urbanization might degrade the quality in future so proper and sustainable management strategies must be adopted to protect and preserve these groundwater resources.

Background: The interaction between rocks and groundwater can be considered as multi-faceted processes in hydrogeology where the groundwater chemistry can be resulted from leaching and/or minerals dissolution. The scientific approach of this study based on testing the contribution of remote sensing in providing information related to rock-groundwater interaction along with the outputs of the geochemical model. The current research aims to explore the impacts of lithologic nature and structural geology on the groundwater chemistry. The mentioned objective is significant for the future sustainable development of groundwater in hyper-arid regions. Therefore, both geology and geochemistry of water-bearing formations along the flow path to the studied aquifers were identified. The area was chosen as an example from hyper-arid region to carry out this scientific approach. Results: The obtained results indicate the existence of three main aquifers: Quaternary alluvial (salinity 1253 mg/l to 18,854 mg/l), Nubian Sandstone (salinity 311 mg/l to 14,388 mg/l), and fractured basement (salinity 320 mg/l to 19,375 mg/ l). The results of speciation modeling showed that studied aquifers are supersaturated with gibbsite, goethite, hematite, magnetite, aragonite, calcite, dolomite, and alunite. Nubian aquifer specifically has homogeneity results due to the similarity of water-bearing and geology of watersheds (ferruginous sandstone and ironstone). Remote sensing data and digital elevation model analyses were used for generation of the thematic layers which is affecting the groundwater occurrences and quality such as geology, geomorphology, structural lineaments, slope, flow direction, drainage lines, and elevations. Conclusions: The current research concluded that the groundwater chemistry can be a signature of the rock-water interaction. The potential implications of the research are represented through a priority map for groundwater exploration for both hydro-geophysical investigation and testing wells in order to evaluate the groundwater capabilities where the data from the recorded wells were used to calibrate this map.

The lack of freshwater supplies in the El-Dabaa area on the northern coast of Egypt is a challenge to development plans, particularly concerning the groundwater aquifer limits. Saltwater desalination is a reliable solution to water shortages. This study was conducted to assess the environmental impact of the abstraction operations from the groundwater in the Middle Miocene aquifer and the effect of the rejected brine resulting from the desalination plant on groundwater using numerical modeling. The calibrated transient model was used to predict the impacts of rejected water discharge. The forecasting scenario results indicate the decline of the aquifer's potentiometric surface to reach its maximum value of 1.4 m at well 3 within the study area by 2040. The radius of the affected area by drawdown is about 550 m, and the drawdown is generally decreased far away from the location of extraction wells (feeding wells). The salinity of the aquifer in the future scenario is affected by the rejected water inflow due to the high coefficient of permeability of the aquifer in the study area. The salinity increases to reach its maximum value of 40919 ppm at each reject well site and its maximum value of 37860 ppm at feed well 2 sites within the study area by the 2040 year. In contrast, most of the study area, mainly feed well 3, wasn't affected by rejected water. The radius of the affected area by salinity is about 700 m around the reject wells site by 2040.
