Hydrogen ion supercapacitor cell construction and rational design of cell structure

Abstract: Summary A hydrogen ion supercapacitor cell was constructed with an electrochemical double‐layer carbon material as positive electrode and an electrochemical hydrogen storage composite material as negative electrode. The electrochemical performances of both electrodes and hybrid device were investigated by varying of the mass ratio of positive and negative electrode. It was found to be that both electrodes went through the different hydrogen ion storage processes and the capacity of this hybrid supercapacitor w… Show more

“…Supercapacitors (also known as electrochemical capacitors) have gained extensive research focus in the field of energy storage due to reasonable high power density, quick charging and discharging, safe operation, and optimum working conditions . The performance of a capacitor is critically depending on its electrode . Therefore, over recent years, the development of efficient supercapacitor electrode is the focus of attention among researcher …”

“…Xie et al developed a hybrid supercapacitor using cobalt/carbon composite material as negative electrode to achieve enhanced energy density (12.9 Wh kg −1 ) and higher power density (1.4 kW kg −1 ). They used conductive graphite as source of carbon.…”

“…And in previous studies, the carbon materials with electrochemical hydrogen storage have been applied to secondary cell, asymmetric supercapacitor and hydrogen ion supercapacitor. 30,[32][33][34][35][36] The properties and applications of the carbon materials depend largely on their surface structural characteristics. Hence, it is necessary to introduce heteroatoms on the surface of carbon materials for functional modification.…”

“…[20][21][22][23][24][25][26] Besides, the electrochemical hydrogen storage also possesses the merits of simplicity, reusability and safety. 27 The mechanism of electrochemical storage contains a few steps as described below: [13][14][15]24,[28][29][30][31] I. In the electrochemical reduction process (charging): when the electrons are transferred from the carbon electrode to the H 2 O molecules in the electrolyte at electrode/electrolyte interface, isolated H atoms are formed and adsorbed on the electrode surface (Volmer reaction).…”
