Hydrocracking of DDGS corn oil over transition metal carbides supported on Al-SBA-15: Effect of fractional sum of metal electronegativities

Abstract: Nickel-based carbide catalysts combined with four different metals (Mo, Nb, W, and Zr) and supported on Al-SBA-15 were investigated for the hydrocracking of distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) corn oil to produce biofuels under mild reaction conditions. The effects of the fractional sums of the electronegativities of the transition metals on the catalyst activities, selectivities, and stabilities were investigated. The closer the fractional sum of the transition metal electronegativities was to the el… Show more

“…The SBA-15 molecular sieve has been widely studied in different catalytic fields because of the good hydrothermal stability, high surface area, and variable pore size as well as its highly ordered mesoporous system. In addition, the acidic properties of Al-SBA-15 can be adjusted over a relatively wide range because the aluminum can replace Si atoms in the framework to form Brönsted acid and nonskeleton structure for Lewis acid . In this paper, mesoporous Al-SBA-15 molecular sieves with different Si/Al ratios were prepared to study the catalytic performance of PODEn to verify the influences of acid strength, acid amount, and acid type on the yield, selectivity, product distribution, and chain length.…”

“…Biofuels such as green diesel produced by hydroprocessing of plant oils typically display similar properties to petroleum diesel. They can be directly used in existing infrastructures with no modifications 2 . Various porous sulfided catalysts have been used to produce biofuels from plant oils 3 .…”

“…27,28 The study of catalysts for hydrocarbon cracking shows that metals with similar electronegativities would therefore lead to similar catalytic effects. 28,29 Therefore, it could be that the d-band center is influenced by the deeper ionization potentials of the B metals (which factors into l B ) takes over as a more important parameter than B-O bond strength.…”
