Digital certificates are regarded as the most secure and scalable way of implementing authentication services in the Internet today. They are used by most popular security protocols, including Transport Layer Security (TLS) and Datagram Transport Layer Security (DTLS). The lifecycle management of digital certificates relies on centralized Certification Authority (CA)-based Public Key Infrastructures (PKIs). However, the implementation of PKIs and certificate lifecycle management procedures in Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) environments presents some challenges, mainly due to the high resource consumption that they imply and the lack of trust in the centralized CAs. This paper identifies and describes the main challenges to implement certificate-based public key cryptography in IIoT environments and it surveys the alternative approaches proposed so far in the literature to address these challenges. Most proposals rely on the introduction of a Trusted Third Party to aid the IIoT devices in tasks that exceed their capacity. The proposed alternatives are complementary and their application depends on the specific challenge to solve, the application scenario, and the capacities of the involved IIoT devices. This paper revisits all these alternatives in light of industrial communication models, identifying their strengths and weaknesses, and providing an in-depth comparative analysis.

An Intelligent Hierarchical Security Framework for VANETs

Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs) are an emerging type of network that increasingly encompass a larger number of vehicles. They are the basic support for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and for establishing frameworks which enable communication among road entities and foster the development of new applications and services aimed at enhancing driving experience and increasing road safety. However, VANETs’ demanding characteristics make it difficult to implement security mechanisms, creating vulnerabilities easily explored by attackers. The main goal of this work is to propose an Intelligent Hierarchical Security Framework for VANET making use of Machine Learning (ML) algorithms to enhance attack detection, and to define methods for secure communications among entities, assuring strong authentication, privacy, and anonymity. The ML algorithms used in this framework have been trained and tested using vehicle communications datasets, which have been made publicly available, thus providing easily reproducible and verifiable results. The obtained results show that the proposed Intrusion Detection System (IDS) framework is able to detect attacks accurately, with a low False Positive Rate (FPR). Furthermore, results show that the framework can benefit from using different types of algorithms at different hierarchical levels, selecting light and fast processing algorithms in the lower levels, at the cost of accuracy, and using more precise, accurate, and complex algorithms in nodes higher in the hierarchy.

Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs) are a growing area that continues to gain interest with an increasing diversity of applications available. These are the underlying network for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), a set of applications and services that aim to provide greater security and comfort to drivers and passengers.However, the characteristics and size of a VANET make it a security challenge. It has been a subject of study, with several research works aimed at this problem, usually involving cryptography. There are, however, some attacks that cannot be solved using traditional methodologies. For example, Sybil attack, Denial of Service (DoS), Black Hole, etc. are not preventable using cryptographic tools. Nonetheless, using an Intrusion Detection System (IDS) can help detect malicious behavior, preventing further damage.This work presents a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) that aims to evaluate the feasibility of this type of solution.Additionally, it should provide information of the most common approaches, allowing the identification of the most used Machine Learning (ML) algorithms, architectures and datasets used.
