“…15 More recently, HPV has been implicated in digital SCC. [7][8][9][15][16][17][18][19][20] A possible association between genital and digital SCC has been presented in several studies, suggesting venereal transmission of the virus. 9,15,16 The association of HPV with SCC in locations other than the digits and genital tract is rare, 16 with exceptions noted in the periorbital skin, 21 where HPV 16-associated SCC has been described.…”

“…Hitherto, there has been little evidence of HPV 16 as an aetiological factor in skin cancers except for squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the fingers. 3–14 Indication of transmission of HPV infections between the genital tract and the fingers has come from one man with HPV 16 simultaneously in lesions on a finger and in penile Bowen’s disease (BD), and from a woman with HPV 16/18 in both a subungual SCC and in uterine cervical intraepithelial neoplasia 9,15 . In two cases reported by us, HPV 16 was found in genital dysplasia and in subsequent (up to 26 years later) BD on the fingers.…”

“…HPV16 DNA, which was detected in the present tumour, has been commonly linked with both genital neoplasia and cutaneous bowenoid lesions (13). Hybridization signals among the positive cells often vary in intensity and distribution and can be classi®ed into three distinct patterns: weak diffuse nuclear staining, suggested as indicative of episomal, non-productive infection; strong nuclear staining with cytoplasmic positivity; and a distinct punctate nuclear signal suggested, in cervical carcinoma (10), to represent viral integration.…”
