Abstract: Does the human lifespan have an impenetrable biological upper limit which ultimately will stop further increase in life lengths? This question is important for understanding aging, and for society, and has led to intense controversies. Demographic data for humans has been interpreted as showing existence of a limit, or even as an indication of a decreasing limit, but also as evidence that a limit does not exist. This paper studies what can be inferred from data about human mortality at extreme age. We find tha… Show more

“…The heterogeneity in population and the dynamics of heterogeneous populations would become important in interpreting human lifespan [37,38]. The question about whether the upper limit to the maximum lifespan is fixed or flexible has been topics of continuous debate [34,[39][40][41][42][43][44][45]. The decrease of the ω estimate in Figure 4 means that more people can reach the biological lifespan limit as expected to be 125 years [12].…”

“…Demographic considerations M uch attention has recently been devoted to the dynamics of mortality in older ages (105 years and older). [1][2][3][4][5][6] A detailed analysis of these articles, and explanations for the causes of the disagreements between some of them, was provided in Zak, 2018. 7 Some researchers conclude that, for whatever reason, the force of mortality progressively departs from the celebrated Gompertz formula at extreme ages and is almost constant after 105 years (and also nearly invariant with sex, country, and year of birth), while others conclude that the force of mortality continues to rise with age.…”
