Human bocavirus in acute gastroenteritis in children in Brazil

Abstract: Epidemiological surveillance for Human Bocavirus (HBoV) was conducted on 105 fecal specimens from children with acute gastroenteritis in Bahia, Brazil. Among of a total 105 stool samples, 44 samples were positive for HBoV as detected by nested-PCR. Of the 44 positive samples, co-infections with other enteric viruses (Norovirus, Adenovirus, and Rotavirus) were found in 12 pediatric patients. Mixed infections among HBoV with Norovirus were frequently observed in this population. The phylogenetic analysis identif… Show more

“…In this study, HBoV was detected in 13 fecal samples from patients with AGE (9.1%). The reported detection frequency rate is within the range reported in previous studies, which is from 0.9% to 41.9% (in most of the studies this frequency was less than 20%) [Chieochansin et al, ; Pham et al, ; Levican et al, ; Kim, ; Alam et al, ; Campos et al, ]. Among the 13 cases of HBoV, 12 were HBoV‐1, and one HBoV‐2.…”

“…The prevalence of HBoV in fecal specimens from patients with gastroenteritis has been reported worldwide [Chieochansin et al, 2008;Pham et al, 2011;Levican et al, 2013;Kim, 2014;Alam et al, 2015;Campos et al, 2015] but so far epidemiological data from Albania is not available.…”

“…However, no patient showed a positive result of HBoV in both NPSs and fecal specimens. This finding seems to be reasonable given that penetration of the virus from the respiratory tract to the gastrointestinal tract takes time [21, 25]. …”

“…Previous reports have indicated detection rates of HBoV in pediatric patients with respiratory tract infection symptoms ranging from 1.5% to 19% [9, 18, 19], and those in pediatric patients with gastroenteritis symptoms ranging from 0.8% to 42% [13, 20, 21]. Such high variation among studies may be due to differences in geography, season, and detection methods of HBoV.…”
