Abstract: Background Histidine–tryptophan–ketoglutarate (HTK) cardioplegia for myocardial protection obviates the need for maintenance cardioplegia doses, and thus allows for greater focus on procedure accuracy. The aim of this meta‐analysis is to evaluate the safety and efficacy of HTK versus multidose cardioplegias during cardiac surgery in an adult population. Methods Electronic searches were performed using PubMed, Science Direct, and Google Scholar databases. The key search terms included HTK cardioplegia AND cardi… Show more

“…Although HTK solution was primarily intended for use in cardiac surgery, it has found a place in the preservation of other organs, such as the liver, pancreas, and kidneys. Nowadays, after subsequent modifications, it is available as Custodiol ® and has been extensively applied as a cardioplegic strategy for myocardial protection [ 26 ]. In the following years, additional research was conducted, which led to the development of several cardioplegic solutions that differ in the composition, method of application, and temperature of the solution used ( Figure 2 ).…”

“…Tryptophan acts as a membrane stabilizer. With a high concentration of scavengers in addition to the absence of leukocytes (in contrast to blood cardioplegia), injuries secondary to the I–R phenomenon are (in theory) somewhat diminished [ 58 , 59 , 60 , 61 ]. Table 1 presents the main differences among the most used cardioplegic solutions.…”
