HPLC Analysis of Gallic and Ellagic Acids in European Oakwood (Quercus roburL.) and Eucalyptus(Eucalyptus globulus)

Abstract: We have studied the efficiency of analytical procedures for two phenolic compounds found in Eucalyptus globulus and Quercus robur L.: gallic and ellagic acid. Isochratic HPLC was used s a mean of quantitative analysis. Eluants for HPLC analysis were H 2 O:CH 3 OH:H3PO4 (975,5:19,5:1, v/v/v) for gallic and (449,5:449,5:1, v/v/v) for ellagic acid. The time required for each HPLC analysis was 10 and 6 min. The recuperation of gallic acid and ellagic acid was respectively 83,0% and 58,6%. We have showed that high … Show more

“…Among the different Eucalyptus species, the wood of E. globulus is the most economically-important raw material for paper pulp production in Spain. Published studies on the chemical composition of extractives from E. globulus wood refer mainly to the more polar fraction containing phenols and polyphenols (Yazaki and Hillis 1976;Charrier et al 1992;Conde et al 1995). Studies referring to the composition of lipophilic extractives from E. globulus wood have been scarce and only the occurrence of several free and esterified fatty acids, hydrocarbons and sitosterol were reported (Swan and Åkerblom 1967).…”

“…This wood also contains a large amount of polyphenols 2 . Article e-mail: salemos@ufu.br Polyphenol studies were carried out using classical chemical techniques [3][4][5][6][7] associated with modern high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) [8][9][10][11][12][13] and high resolution liquid and solid state 13 C-NMR 11,14,15 and FTIR spectroscopies.…”

En el mismo estudio, Gharzouli et al (1999) protection agents against oxidative damage of lipids and proteins (Charrier, Marques, & Haluk, 1992).…”
