Some research has been also concentrated on fans who lack geographical proximity with their favorite sport team (e.g., displaced fans, fans who support away teams that compete in the same league as the local alternatives, and foreign supporters) in terms of the reasons for following such teams or of the antecedents to team identification (Adrijiw and Hyatt, 2009; Collins et al , 2016; Hyatt and Adrijiw, 2008; Kerr and Emery, 2016; Pu and James, 2017). “…The concept of “satellite fans” defined above is specific to the fans who spectate sport contests through some form of mass media and it includes the population of “displaced fans.” In this project, we are more specifically interested in the “distant fans” who have not resided in physical proximity to their favorite team (see full definition below). In another study, Andrijiw and Hyatt (2009) investigated the behavioral differences between fans of a non-local team and their local counterparts (also see Hyatt and Andrijiw, 2008).
