Electrospinning has by far proved to be the most successful method to spin high aspect and surface area to volume ratio nanofiber for multidisciplinary applications. Its application, however, as reinforcement in fiber reinforced polymer matrix composites (FRPC's) started from interlaminar fracture toughness improvement through interleaving. Since then, its usage both in short fiber and nonwoven mat formation has been phenomenally increased to tailor mechanical properties. This review paper focuses on application of nanofiber in multiscale reinforced epoxy matrix composites for mechanical performance. After a brief overview of electrospinning and spinning parameters, it presents a case for nanofiber as reinforcement with attendant mechanisms to develop insight into nanocomposite performance. Next, it summarizes and shares findings of studies, carried out in last 10 years, seeking to enhance tensile, flexural, interlaminar toughness, impact, and fatigue properties of epoxy composites through electrospun nanofiber reinforcement. Finally, it presents a perspective to gain headways in nanofiber reinforced FRPC's research through a variety of processing and material variables.

Epoxy resin as a thermoset polymer is frequently used in engineering applications. Its nature as a thermoset resin results in brittleness of material structure, which ultimately leads to low toughness; so its modification with thermoplastic polymers is of prime interest. This work aims at studying of tensile properties and morphological characterization of Polyamide 66 (PA66) nanofiber yarn reinforced epoxy nanocomposite. Decrease in elastic modulus and enhancement in tensile toughness were achieved by increasing the nanofiber yarn contents. River pattern, crack branching, and nanofiber yarn pull-out were various toughening mechanisms confirmed via scanning electron microscopic images.
Electrospun nanofibers are emerging reinforcing fillers with epoxy matrix owing to its high aspect ratio, surface area, and mechanical properties resulting in wider applications. Application of non‐woven configuration of nanofiber mats, collected from electrospinning has been traditionally confined to improve interlaminar responses of fiber reinforced composites. However, potential of short nanofiber in improving bulk matrix properties cannot be under estimated. This study adopts matrix modification approach by incorporating different concentration of nylon 6 short nanofiber in epoxy matrix to investigate its influence on tensile and viscoelastic properties of nanocomposite. Results showed a moderate improvement in modulus for nanocomposites despite to general drop in strength, however fracture energy and failure strain improved significantly at an optimum concentration of 0.1 wt% nanofiber. In addition, highest storage modulus as well as damping factor was recorded with decline in glass transition temperature for 0.1 wt% nanofiber content. Moreover, it was revealed that addition of nanofiber altered brittle fracture to neck‐featured ductile mode and effectively introduced energy absorbing interfaces making it well suit for diverse applications.
