How Early Can Pancreatic Cancer Be Recognized A Case Report and Review of the Literature

Abstract: The early symptoms of pancreatic cancer are often very vague. They may precede the diagnosis by years and go unrecognized. This makes pancreatic cancer one of the cancers with the worst survival rates. The progression rate of the early phase might be slower than previously thought. Here, we report a case where symptoms, including thromboembolism and new-onset diabetes mellitus, preceded the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer by 6 years or longer. The awareness of the early symptoms of pancreatic cancer is required… Show more

“…The probable early clinical symptoms like thromboembolism and new-onset type II diabetes occur much earlier, though the symptoms are not necessarily associated with pancreatic cancer. The early stage progress of the disease could be much slower than previously thought, giving patients with early diagnosis a much better survival probability [ 3 ]. To date, the diagnosis is based on clinical signs and pathology even though the early symptoms are vague and non-definitive.…”

“…Pancreatic cancer is a very challenging disease because most of the patients are already at the advanced stage before being diagnosed [ 22 , 23 ]. Despite extensive efforts in searching for effective treatments for pancreatic cancer, there has been no major breakthrough for decades.…”

“…Pancreatic cancer is a difficult disease to treat because many patients remain undiagnosed until their cancer is advanced [ 2 , 22 ]. Despite extensive efforts to develop pancreatic cancer therapies, there has been no improvement for decades.…”

“…Despite extensive efforts to develop pancreatic cancer therapies, there has been no improvement for decades. The most difficult hurdle to treating pancreatic cancer is the dearth of early symptoms and therefore the late diagnosis of advanced disease [ 22 ]. Another reason pancreatic cancer therapies remain often ineffective is that most therapeutics has focused on chemotherapy with cytotoxic drugs, which have limited effect on overall survival [ 23 , 24 ].…”
