A widespread dissemination of improved cooking stoves in the developing world can lead to considerable improvement of health, to reduced pressure on natural woody resources and to substantial reductions of emissions contributing to global warming. A number of programs have aimed to achieve such dissemination, while few of the programs have had any large-scale success. It has been suggested that a more commercial approach, as opposed to subsidized or freely distributed stoves, would achieve a higher level of success. However, a majority of the households that would benefit from an improved stove are poor and cannot afford the cost of the stove, especially if no monetary savings are possible from a more efficient fuel use, i.e., if the fuel used is collected biomass. The aim of this paper is to propose and evaluate a model that might overcome some of the barriers previous programs have experienced. The proposed model involves commercialization of collected fuels. The methods for evaluation include a qualitative assessment of the proposed model aided by the literature on improved cooking stove programs, fuel wood collection and fuel switching together with a quantitative simplistic model calculation of a hypothetical application of the proposed model principles, in order to assess its financial feasibility. The assessment indicates that the model would increase both households' incentives and means to purchase and use improved cooking stoves. Furthermore, the model could possibly be partly financed based on carbon credits achieved from the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

El artículo presenta los determinantes en la elección del tipo de combustible primario para cocción de alimentos en cuatro asentamientos humanos urbanos localizados en los departamentos de Managua y León. Se eligió un modelo logístico binario (Logit) que permitió concluir que los factores que inciden en la elección son: el ingreso, los niveles de educación, el departamento al que pertenecen los barrios, número de miembros del hogar y la edad del cabeza de familia. Este estudio ofrece un punto de inicio en la discusión de los aspectos de relevancia en la demanda de combustibles a nivel urbano en Managua y León.

Burkina Faso has been running many interventions in the energy sector over the last decades. Still, there is a dearth of reliable and ready available price and income elasticities of demand to base these on, especially for domestic use of traditional fuels. The paper uses an Almost Ideal demand system (AIDS) model to explain the failures of wood-energy pricing and substitution policies. With the consumers' preferences strong separability assumption, income elasticities of AIDS model are estimated; the use of the formula of Frisch (1959) allowed computing own-and cross-price elasticities. A relative inelasticity is observed for.woodenergy demand compared to households income and fuel price. This low sensitivity of the wood-energy compared to its own price and households' income confirms the strong dependency of these households to fuel wood. Moreover, hicksian cross price elasticities between wood-energy and other fuels reveal substitution relations. The low income and own-and cross-price elasticities of wood-energy explain why substitution and price policies do not operate well and have a very weak impact on the fall in the demand of the wood-energy.
