Autoimmune Uveitis (Choroiditis) in the Guinea Pig Sensitized with Homologous Uvea and its Differentiation from that Following Sensitization with Homologous Retina

Although these reactions were attributed to contami nation resulting from the technique used to separate the tissues for im munologic study, the source of the tissue contaminants could not be lo calized [1], It is likely that repeated inoculations with tissue extracts highly concentrated by lyophilization greatly magnified the problem [2], In view of the general similarity between the nature of antigen and le sions attributed to sensitization with uvea by A ronson et al [1][2][3][4][5] and those attributed to sensitization with retina [16,[18][19][20][21], there is a strong possibility that the reactions observed by A ronson and co-workers were not due to sensitization to uveal antigen, but to sensitization to retina antigen recovered as a contaminant and concentrated with the uveal preparation.…”

Nevertheless, Aronson [1965] and recently Wacker and Kalsow [1976] observed uveitis in guinea pigs following immunization with uveal extracts.
