In our tribute to Professor Michael Turvey, we have two parallel goals: 1) to highlight the scientific scope of Turvey’s impact on motor development; and, 2) to expose readers to papers that they may not have read but that might cast new light on age-old questions they confront in their current research on motor development. The paper is divided into two equal time periods. In Part 1, from 1975 to 1999, we trace the emergence and growth of Dynamic Systems/Ecological Realism (perception-action) paradigms. We explain how the existing paradigms in motor development research, the descriptive and information processing paradigms were, in part, replaced by new paradigms whose existence owes much to Michael Turvey and his colleagues. We suggest that this time period was one where Turvey had the most conceptual influence on the field. In Part 2, from 2000 to 2024, we describe how factors, including the emergence of two new paradigms in motor development research may have reduced Turvey’s direct influence. But we also note that there is still much research undertaken that builds off the bases of Dynamic Systems and Perception-Action Coupling approaches including research by Turvey and his students/colleagues. We end with the suggestion that the present generation of motor development researchers may have something to gain by re-/reading research from these perspectives regardless of whether it is directly from Professor Turvey’s pen or from those whom he influenced (or influenced him).

Self-motion can be perceived via podokinetic information, that is, based upon the movements of the legs during legged locomotion. This information can be integrated in order to perceive a path of travel through the environment (i.e., via podokinetic path integration). Two types of podokinetic information have been distinguished by analyzing the patterns of bias that result from manipulating the gait patterns used in direct-route homing tasks. Each type of podokinetic information has been associated specific groupings of gaits that support equivalent perceptual measurements of self-motion. Specifically, gaits are grouped if they can be varied across the outbound and inbound phases of a homing task (e.g., walking outbound and jogging inbound) and the accuracy of homing task performances does not differ from matched gait control conditions.Recently, it was theorized that different types of podokinetic information are related to the differences in the kinematic form of limb motions in these groupings of gaits. Here we test an alternative hypothesis, namely, that attention plays a role in selecting the type of podokinetic information. In three experiments we manipulated the crawling gait patterns used in direct-route homing tasks. Consistent with our hypotheses, we observe that selfmotion is equivalently measured via crawling movement patterns that 1) have distinct kinematic forms, but that similarly direct participants' attention onto controlling the swing phase trajectories of their arms, and 2) have distinct inter-limb coordination patterns (i.e., pace vs. trot), but do not require attention to be specifically focused upon swing phase arm trajectories.

Combining virtual reality with treadmill walking, we measured the relative importance of visual cues and nonvisual self-motion cues for distance reproduction. Participants used both cues but put more weight on self-motion; weight on visual cues had a trend to correlate with looking at visually informative areas. Participants overshot distances, especially when self-motion was slow; they adjusted steps to self-motion cues but not to visual cues. Our work thus quantifies the multimodal contributions to distance reproduction.
