Background: There is a wide spectrum of salivary gland lesions with morphological and clinical diversity which makes it a difficult task for histopathological interpretation. Tumours of salivary glands are uncommon accounting for 3-10% of the total tumors of head and neck region and less than one percent of all tumours. The aim of this study was to recognize various histomorphological patterns of salivary gland lesions, their frequency, age, gender and site wise distribution.Methods: This study was carried out from June 2015 to May 2018 in the department of Pathology, JLN Medical College and associated Group of Hospitals, Ajmer. Total 121 cases of salivary gland lesions were included. Specimens were processed and stained by Hematoxylin and Eosin stain followed by histopathological examination.Results: Out of total 121 cases, 43.8% were non-neoplastic and 56.2% were neoplastic. In non-neoplastic lesions predominant was chronic sialadenitis (50.9%) followed by mucocele (28.3%) which commonly seen in submandibular gland (47.17%). Among neoplastic cases, 79.4% were benign and 20.6% were malignant lesions. Neoplastic lesions commonly were seen in parotid (75%). Pleomorphic adenoma was the commonest benign tumour (81.4%). Mucoepidermoid carcinoma was the most common malignant salivary tumour. Benign tumours were common in third and fourth decades, whereas malignant tumours were more common in fifth and sixth decades. Male predominance was seen in overall salivary gland lesions.Conclusions: Histopathological examination is mandatory in the diagnosis of salivary gland lesions because of their wide spectrum of histomorphology.

T he salivary glands consist of three major glands as parotid, submandibular and sublingual glands and hundreds of minor glands, which are diffusely located in the beginning part of the respiratory system. Tumors of the salivary glands are rarely encountered. However, they appear with different histopathological characters. Different biological behaviors can be observed even in neoplasms defined by the same name. In the latest classification made by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2017, salivary gland tumors were classified into more than 30 benign and malignant histologic subtypes [1]. This wide histopathological spectrum and significant differences in prognosis between them distinguish salivary gland tumors from other organ neoplasms. Salivary gland tumors account for approximately 3-4% of all head and neck tumors [2]. Their inci-ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE: To determine the demographic characteristics of benign and malignant salivary gland tumors in our department in the last 15 years. METHODS: In this study, the files of the patients who underwent salivary gland surgery between 2004 and 2019 in our department were analyzed retrospectively. A total of 366 patients whose diagnoses of salivary gland tumor histopathologically confirmed were included in this study. The demographic data of the patients and tumor localizations were recorded, and their relationships with histopathological results were examined. RESULTS: Of the 366 tumors, 292 (80%) of them was originated from the parotid gland, 52 (14%) from the submandibular gland, and 22 (6%) from the minor salivary gland. The male: female ratio was found as 1.2:1, and the mean age of the patients was 50.37 years. A total of 259 (70.8%) tumors were benign, and 107 (29.2%) were malignant. The most frequent benign tumor was pleomorphic adenoma, with 121 cases (46.7%). While pleomorphic adenomas constituted the majority of the benign tumors of the submandibular gland and minor salivary glands, Warthin tumor was detected more than pleomorphic adenoma in the parotid gland. The most common malignant tumor was mucoepidermoid carcinoma, with 26 cases (24.3%). CONCLUSION: The distribution of the salivary gland tumors detected in our department was found to be substantially similar to other worldwide series. Unlike the literature, we concluded that salivary gland tumors were seen slightly more in males, minor salivary gland tumors were relatively rare and Warthin tumors were more frequently detected in our region.

Background Skin adnexal tumours (SATs) comprise a diverse range of neoplasms, which are difficult to diagnose clinically. They present in paediatric and adult populations, and may be indicative of an underlying genetic syndrome. There is a lack of recent data on the presentation of these tumours in clinical practice in European populations. Objectives To characterize the clinical and pathological features of SATs received at a single tertiary centre over a 5-year period. Methods A retrospective health record audit of SATs received at the Department of Cellular Pathology, Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, during the period November 2012 to October 2017 was performed. Results In total, 107 144 skin cases were received during the audit period. A total of 1615 cases of SATs from 1359 patients were included; 1570 (97Á2%) were benign and 45 (2Á8%) were malignant. Overall, the average age at presentation was 55 years (range 11 months to 97 years) and the male to female ratio was 0Á77 : 1. Sweat gland and hair follicle SATs were most frequently excised; in adults, the most frequent tumour was hidrocystoma, and in children, pilomatrixoma occurred most often. Prebiopsy diagnosis was correct in 28% of cases. Benign SATs are often markers of an associated genetic condition, which warrants improved discrimination of sporadic from genetically related SATs. Conclusions SATs are difficult to diagnose clinically, and clinicopathological correlation may help enhance discrimination of genetically related SATs from sporadic cases. These data have implications for clinical and dermatopathological training provision, the development of reporting standards, and genetic assessment of selected patients.What is already known about this topic?• Skin adnexal tumours (SATs) comprise a diverse range of neoplasms, which arise from the hair follicle, sebaceous and eccrine glands.• Clinical diagnosis is difficult owing to the lack of discriminatory features.• Selected SATs are recognized markers of underlying genetic conditions, but the proportion of these tumours occurring in unselected European populations is not known.
