Histology in 3D: development of an online interactive student resource on epithelium

Abstract: Epithelium is an important and highly specialised tissue type that makes up the lining of inner and outer surfaces of the human body. It is proposed that a self-study tool adds to efficient learning and lecturing on this complicated topic in medical curricula. This paper describes the development and evaluation of an online interactive 3D resource on epithelium for undergraduate medical students. A first evaluation was carried out by means of an online survey (n ¼ 37). The resource was evaluated positively on … Show more

“…Virtual microscopes have been reported to be as good as optical microscopy when it comes to learning histology [ 15 ] and their use has increased in education [ 16 ]. Digitalization also offers diverse possibilities for learning histology and two developments in this field are a three-dimensional, interactive online resource on the epithelium [ 17 ] and a virtual microscope histology laboratory for learning histotechnology [ 18 ].…”

“…A future proposal can be national digitalization in developing countries, flipped classrooms during online teaching, and interactive lecture series. Whether there is a place for 3D online teaching in developing countries is still questionable while adopting a more straightforward solution [15].…”

“…In addition to modeling the tissue based on histological sections only, also fusion models of histological serial sections and native 3D imaging modalities such as micro-computed tomography (μCT) [ 4 10 ] or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) [ 11 – 13 ] are possible. Even manually created 3D models representing epithelium with textures acquired from histological samples have been made for teaching purposes [ 14 ]. However, applicability of 3D imaging modalities depends on the physical sample size and such measurement devices are not always available, while manual modeling from histology data is time-consuming and subjective.…”
