High-Speed Rotary Ultrasonic Elliptical Milling of Ti-6Al-4V Using High-Pressure Coolant

Abstract: High-speed rotary ultrasonic elliptical milling (HRUEM), as a novel ultrasonic vibration cutting method, has been introduced in milling the alloy Ti-6Al-4V. The application of ultrasonic vibration in high-speed milling can help open the cutting contact area intermittently. New cutting effects will happen with full use of the separation effect brought by ultrasonic vibration and the cooling effect brought by a high-pressure coolant (HPC). On the basis of that, this paper firstly introduces HPC into HRUEM of Ti-… Show more

“…Ultrasonic peening milling (UPM, Figure 32) is a process that uses vertical ultrasonic vibration to enhance the surface properties of a workpiece. Ultrasonic vibration-assisted milling (UVAM) is a technique that combines the benefits of USM with the efficiency of milling [117], as shown in Figure 32. Suárez et al [42] compared the effects of alternative manufacturing processes, such as AWJM, WEDM and UVAM, with CM (Figure 10).…”

“…However, using high pressure [30], the coolant is able to penetrate the boiling layer and increase heat dissipation [31]. Good results have been obtained by the combination of HPJC and high-speed rotary ultrasonic elliptical milling (HRUEM) in which the tool wear mode of adhesive wear was able to be significantly inhibited [32].…”
