High Rate and High Temperature Fracture Behaviour of Polycrystalline Diamond

Abstract: Abstract. Polycrystalline diamond (PCD) materials have a variety of applications, mainly as cutting tools for machining non-ferrous metals and non-metallic materials. A significant application of PCD is in oil and gas industry for rock drilling operations. Other important areas, such as mining, have yet to reach their full potential. These cutters/tools are subjected to high operating temperatures, impact loads and abrasive wear during these operations, which may lead to their sudden failure. An advantage of t… Show more

“…The series of tests on laser-cut cemented carbide specimens were previously performed in laboratory conditions at room temperature. Loading rate was varied from quasistatic of 1 mm/min up to dynamic of 5 m/s using the same procedure as outlined earlier in [1,2]. Using standard equations, the fracture toughness, fracture energy, flexural strength and Young's modulus were determined according to linear elastic fracture mechanics.…”

“…The application of laser processing tools is affected by the laser parameters and material’s properties (e.g., absorption, electron relaxation time, binder, and grain size). For example, smaller grain sizes are more likely to suffer from thermal mismatch causing micro-cracks throughout the processed region [ 38 ] as heat conducts more in smaller grains [ 39 ]. The binder composition also affects the results of process.…”

“…Polycrystalline diamond (PCD) is widely used in various application, mainly as cutting tools for machining of nonferrous metals, non-metallic materials and also applied in rock drilling application [1,2]. Considered as among the hardest materials in the world, Polycrystalline diamond was found as suitable cutting tools for high speed machining application of aerospace materials such as Carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP), aluminum alloys and titanium alloys [3][4][5].…”
