Abstract: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) genotype A has been divided recently into two subgroups, designated A-A' (genotype A excluding A') and A'. Isolates belonging to subgroup A' have been identified in Africa. A new genotyping method, based on PCR amplification of the pre-S/S genome region and subsequent restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis, was developed, that established a correlation between RFLP subtypes and subgroups within genotype A. To investigate the occurrence of subgroup A' in South America, … Show more

“…These genotypes have been found in other Brazilian hemodialysis populations (De Castro et al 2000, Teles et al 2002, Souza et al 2003 reflecting the HBV genotypes circulating in our country (Moraes et al 1996, Araujo et al 2004, Sitnik et al 2004. Genotype D was predominant in this hemodialysis patients (61.5%), as observed by others (De Castro et al 2000, Teles et al 2002).…”

“…Pre-S/S genome region was amplified by a seminested PCR assay essentially as described by MottaCastro et al (2005). PCR products were subjected to RFLP genotyping analysis (Araujo et al 2004).…”

“…In Japan, a different distribution of HBV genotypes has been reported in HIVinfected and HIV-negative populations (Koibuchi et al 2001). In Brazil, where genotypes A, D, and F are the most prevalent, a similar distribution of genotypes between HIV infected and non infected patients has been observed (Niel et al 1994, Moraes et al 1996, Araujo et al 2004, Santos et al 2004). …”

“…It was suggested that subgroup Aa may have evolved in indigenous populations of African countries. Later, this genotype was also found in South America (8,9), suggesting that this high proportion of subgroup Aa may be due to the intense slave trade from Africa to South America during the colonial period. In another study in a city with a large percent of African descendants (Salvador, BA, Brazil), genotype A was also the most prevalent in the local population, followed by genotypes D and F, but no case of genotype E was identified (10).…”

“…Indeed, genotype E has never been found within the Americas (14) or in the Afro-Brazilian population (8,10,11,15), a fact suggesting the emergence of genotype E as a human pathogen from the mid to the late 19th century.…”
