“…Therefore, serological tests accompanied by and duodenal biopsy are still mandatory to confirm the diagnosis of CD. Some Brazilian studies (3,7,10,11,24,26,27,28,37) showed high CD prevalence through the evaluation of the level of antitransglutaminase and duodenal biopsy, including 1:214 in São Paulo (26) , 1:273 in Riberão Preto (24) , 1:417 in Curitiba (27) and 1:681 in Brasilia (10) .…”

“…Several CD screening studies carried out during the last decade in Brazil have shown a prevalence of CD similar to that found in European countries, varying from 1:681 (0,14%) to 1:214 (0.46%) in presumably healthy blood donors (11,20,23,24,26) and from 0.34% to 0.84% in the general population (13,25) . In a previous survey performed with 2,629 girls and adult women at the same geographic area of this current study, it was found 8 females presenting biopsy-proven CD, corresponding to 0.34% prevalence (25) .…”

“…1). The prevalence of CD in children in northern India is 0.32%, in adults in Turkey it is 1.3%, in Argentina it is 0.6% and in Brazil it is between 0.15% and 0.46% [15,16]. The current prevalence of CD in Europe and the USA is 1-3% [16].…”
