High Occurrence of Shiga-Like Toxin-Producing Strains among Diarrheagenic Escherichia coli Isolated from Raw Beef Products in Rio de Janeiro City, Brazil

Abstract: Raw beef samples (n = 105) were examined for diarrheagenic Escherichia coli (DEC) using standard methods. The isolates obtained (n = 1,066) were screened for Shiga-like toxins (SLT-I and SLT-II), cytolethal distending toxin (CLDT), enterotoxins (LT-I and STa), and classical enteropathogenic (EPEC) and enteroinvasive (EIEC) serogroups. Seventy-three (6.8%) DEC isolates representing 42 strains isolated from 34 (32.4%) beef samples were detected. SLT-producing E. coli (SLTEC) was the most frequent DEC category fo… Show more

“…Moreover, serotype O111:NM remains as the most frequent STEC serotype isolated in our settings (Vaz et al, manuscript in preparation). Despite the apparent low occurrence in humans, a high frequency of STEC strains has been found in foods and animal reservoirs (Cerqueira et al 1997(Cerqueira et al , 1999 but only some of the serotypes identified in animals were recognized as causes of human illness.…”

“…Although some studies in Brazil reported the occurrence of STEC in different animal reservoirs (12,14,24), data concerning isolation of these microorganisms from food of animal origin is scarce (3,7,19).…”

“…Embora alguns trabalhos constatem uma elevada ocorrência de Escherichia coli produtora de toxina Shiga (STEC) em bovinos no Brasil (CERQUEIRA et al 1997;1999;GONZALEZ, 2003;TRISTÃO, 2007) transmissão por produtos de origem animal em nosso país, como carne, leite e seus derivados.…”
