Summary The modular multilevel converters (MMCs) are frequently preferred for medium and high power energy conversion systems thanks to their modular structure and high quality output waveform. The remarkable studies related to the MMC have been carried out in recent years, which are mainly focused on its topology, control, or application. In this paper, MMC circuit topologies consisting of traditional submodule cells and new proposed configurations are introduced, and their control process, modulation techniques, and application areas are discussed in order to provide the readers the current state of the art of MMC technology. A wide part of this article is devoted to demonstrate the recent contributions arising in MMC studies. In this context, this paper not only outlines the circuit topology, control objectives, and applications of the MMC but also presents a comprehensive review, principally in terms of the latest developments of it. Ultimately, detailed proposals and new possible topics are provided to drive future expectations of MMC technology.

A modular multilevel converter (MMC) with a conventional centralized control system has many optical fibers for gate signals. A daisy‐chained distributed control system that consists of a primary controller and daisy‐chained cell controllers can reduce the fibers effectively. However, communication delays occur between the controllers and affect the current control performance. This article reveals the current control model of an MMC with phase‐shifted pulse width modulation using the daisy‐chained distributed control system considering the communication delays. We derived a generalized pulse transfer function of the current control and verified it with numerical analyses and circuit simulations. The impacts of the communication delays on the current control and its gain design method are also discussed and analyzed. © 2019 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. Resumo -Este artigo propõe um observador por modos deslizantes aplicado no controle das tensões equivalentes dos polos de conversores multiníveis modulares (MMC) em aplicações com elevado número de submódulos conectados em série, com o objetivo de reduzir a complexidade do sistema de comunicação. Esta técnica é utilizada no sistema de controle do MMC, possibilitando uma implementação mais simples, uma vez que não é necessário o envio das tensões de todos os capacitores para o processador central. O observador proposto possui um termo adicional que permite um melhor desempenho transitório, ao contrário de observadores por modos deslizantes já propostos. Adicionalmente, uma análise de estabilidade por Lyapunov é apresentada juntamente com a definição dos ganhos do observador. Resultados de simulação e experimentais são incluídos para demonstrar o adequado desempenho do observador com o sistema de controle do MMC sob diferentes condições de operação. Palavras-chave - SLIDING MODE OBSERVER APPLIED ON EQUIVALENT ARM VOLTAGE CONTROL IN MODULAR MULTILEVEL CONVERTERSAbstract -This paper proposes a sliding mode observer (SMO) for equivalent capacitor voltages control in modular multilevel converters (MMC) to reduce the communication complexity in applications with high number of series-connected submodules. This technique is used in the MMC control system and allows a simpler MMC implementation, since the individual capacitor voltages are not used in the central processor. The observer has an additional term that allows a better transient performance, unlike to the already proposed SMOs. In addition, the Lyapunov stability analysis of the SMO is presented with the design of the observer gains. Simulation and experimental results are included to demonstrate the suitable SMO performance with the MMC control system under different operating conditions.
