Heterogeneous Fenton-like degradation of Rhodamine 6G in water using CuFeZSM-5 zeolite catalyst prepared by hydrothermal synthesis

Abstract: a b s t r a c tIn this study, heterogeneous Fenton-like degradation of reactive azo dye Rhodamine 6G in water was investigated over a CuFeZSM-5 zeolite catalyst prepared by hydrothermal synthesis. At initial pH of 3.4, a color removal of 100% was achieved after a reaction time of 45 min. TOC elimination was measured to be 51.8% after 2 h of oxidation. Initial decolorization rate was described by an equation of −r A0 = 4.56 × 10 2 e −24.83/RT C R6G,0 C 0.35 H 2 O 2 ,0 where R is in kJ/mol. The leaching of iron … Show more

“…Then a 15 ml solution of H 2 O 2 (30%, v:v) was added into the dye solution, and the mixture was stirred for 2 h. A sample was taken and centrifuged for 0.5 h to remove the oxide; then the absorbance was measured in a spectrophotometer at the wavelengths of 275 nm and 523 nm. The decrease of the intensity of the band 523 nm was used as a measure of decolonization degree, while the decrease of the intensity of the band 275 nm was used as a measure of degradation degree [26,27] The degree of decolorization or degradation of the dye was determined as expressed in Equation 1…”

“…[50] The decrease of the intensity of the band at 523 nm was used as a measure of decolonization degree, while the decrease of the intensity of the band at 275 nm was used as a measure of degradation degree. [26,27] The decrease in the intensity of the band at 275 nm is attributed to the formation of intermediates resulting from the degradation of the dye, which still contains benzoic and naphthalene types ring. [27] First, blank experiments were carried out.…”

“…Recently, zeolites containing copper have shown high efficiency in the oxidation of some organic compounds as phenol, o-phenilenediamine, methylene blue, rhodamine 6G [20][21][22][23]. Most of zeolitic materials are acidic materials, thus Additional Supporting Information may be found in the online version of this article.…”

“…In this process, powerful oxidant hydroxyl radical (·OH) is produced from H 2 O 2 in the presence of ferrous cation, which can degrade many refractory compounds including dye [3]. However, homogeneous Fenton process suffer from some famous disadvantages such as narrow pH range of 2.5 -3, generation of secondary pollutants and requirement of additional separation and disposal.…”
