In basking in the warm sunshine of the acceptance of community service orders, I believe that the Probation Service is in danger of missing a vital debate about the interpretation and use of them. I have the impression that there is a certain ambiguous approach whereby the Probation Service is unwilling seriously to digest their full implications. I fear that this may, in part at least, be due to the belief that a community service order has contributed or will contribute to the devaluing of probation orders.…
