Hepatitis A outbreak disproportionately affecting men who have sex with men (MSM) in the European Union and European Economic Area, June 2016 to May 2017

Abstract: Between 1 June 2016 and 31 May 2017, 17 European Union (EU) and European Economic Area countries reported 4,096 cases associated with a multi-country hepatitis A (HA) outbreak. Molecular analysis identified three co-circulating hepatitis A virus (HAV) strains of genotype IA: VRD_521_2016, V16–25801 and RIVM-HAV16–090. We categorised cases as confirmed, probable or possible, according to the EU outbreak case definitions. Confirmed cases were infected with one of the three outbreak strains. We investigated case … Show more

“…In countries with low HAV endemicity, HAV infection has a predilection for at‐risk populations, such as men who have sex with men (MSM) and illicit drug users . Beginning in 2015‐2016, large outbreaks of acute hepatitis A predominantly affecting MSM reemerged in Asia, Europe, and America, in which oral‐anal sexual contact among at‐risk individuals might have contributed to HAV transmission . On the other hand, HEV infection that caused approximately 44,000 deaths in 2015 has become a significant public health issue given that autochthonous cases are increasingly reported .…”

“…Small‐scale outbreaks occurred in 2006, 2010, and 2014. The incidence of sexually transmitted diseases has recently increased, particularly among men who have sex with men (MSM) . High number of seroprevalence of hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis E virus, and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) have been reported among MSM .…”

“…Hepatitis A virus (HAV) is an important cause of viral hepatitis worldwide . Although commonly perceived as a food‐borne, self‐limited infection, recent outbreaks of acute hepatitis A (AHA) involving more than 4,000 patients who were mostly men who have sex with men (MSM) in Europe and the Americas highlighted its potential as a contagious sexually transmitted disease in high‐income countries . In the United States, a recent large outbreak of AHA centered in homeless people and injecting drug users and resulted in 1,521 cases, 1,073 admissions, and 41 deaths .…”
