A total of 2,708 individuals from the European-derived population of Rio Grande do Sul, divided into seven mesoregions, and of 226 individuals of similar origin from Santa Catarina were studied. Seventeen protein genetic systems, as well as grandparents' nationalities, individuals' surnames, and interethnic admixture were investigated. The alleles which presented the highest and lowest differences were GLO1*2 (16%) and PGD*A (2%), respectively, but in general no significant genetic differences were found among mesoregions. The values observed were generally those expected for individuals of European descent, with the largest difference being a lower prevalence (34-39%) of P*1. Significant heterogeneity among mesoregions was observed for the other variables considered, and was consistent with historical records. The Amerindian contribution to the gene pool of European-derived subjects in Rio Grande do Sul was estimated to be as high as 11%. Based on the four data sets, the most general finding was a tendency for a northeast-southwest separation of the populations studied. Seven significant phenotype associations between systems were observed at the 5% level (three at the 0.1% level). Of the latter, the two most interesting (since they were also observed in other studies) were MNSs/Duffy and Rh/ACP.

Hemoglobinopathies are the most common monogenic disorders worldwide; however, they have never been systematically studied from a genetic perspective in Uruguay. In this study, we determined the frequencies of hemoglobin variants in Afro-Uruguayans. A sample of 52 healthy unrelated Afro-Uruguayans from the northern (N = 28) and southern (N = 24) regions of the country was analyzed. Eight individuals (15.4%) were heterozygous for -a 3,7 thalassemia; seven of them (29.2%) were originally from the southern region, whereas one of them (3.6%) was from the northern region; the differences between both regions were statistically significant (p = 0.016 +/-0.003). The only structural mutation detected was b S , which is typical of African populations. Four individuals (10%) were heterozygous for b S , three of them (13.6%) from the South, and one (5.6%) from the North. The b S haplotypes were analyzed in eight individuals: two were homozygous b S /b S , two were heterozygous b S /b thal , and four were heterozygous b S /b A . This haplotype distribution (60% Bantu, 20% Benin, and 20% Bantu A2) is in agreement with historical records reporting a predominantly Bantu origin for the enslaved Africans brought to Uruguay. Even though this is a preliminary study, due to the small sample size, our results are suggestive of a relatively high incidence of hemoglobinopathies in the Afro-Uruguayan population.

No significant differences were observed on the average number of pregnancies and livebirths, as well as on the frequencies of spontaneous abortions, stillbirths, premature children and those dying before the age of reproduction when the reproductive performances of 123 couples having at least one abnormal hemoglobin carrier were compared with the same number of appropriately chosen controls. The number of sibs of these carriers and of those with normal hemoglobin only did not differ significantly either. These and viability data reported elsewhere indicate essentially similar fitnesses for the individuals compared, who live in the nonmalarious environment of Porto Alegre. The fate of the Hb^s and Hb^c genes seems to be their gradual disappearance from this and other populations of the New World.
