Helpers compensate for age-related declines in parental care and offspring survival in a cooperatively breeding bird

Abstract: Offspring from elderly parents often have a lower survival probability because of parental senescence. In cooperatively breeding species, alloparental care provided by helpers is predicted to mitigate age-dependent declines in parental performance. We tested this prediction in the facultatively cooperative-breeding Seychelles warbler (Acrocephalus sechellensis). We find that the provisioning rates of female, but not male, breeders decline sharply with age, and that female breeders reduce their provisioning rat… Show more

“…Ages of the group members that act as helpers in the rearing of offspring may also potentially be of importance. The presence [23,24], number [25,26], sex [27,28], behavior [29,30], and relatedness [31] of helpers can all impact the fitness of the young. There is also evidence from several species that helpers become more effective in provisioning young with increased experience.…”

“…Senescence has been well documented in the Seychelles warbler (Hammers et al 2015) with age-dependent declines in both survival and reproduction (Hammers et al 2012(Hammers et al , 2013Raj Pant et al 2020). Mothers provide more parental care to the offspring than fathers (Hammers et al 2019) and the amount of provisioning declines with maternal, but not paternal age (Hammers et al 2021). Further, the first-year survival of offspring declines with maternal, but not paternal age (Hammers et al 2021).…”

“…For instance, a negative effect of parental age on offspring lifespan has been reported across a range of taxa in both laboratory and field studies ('Lansing effect'; (Plaistow et al 2015;Wylde et al 2019;Monaghan et al 2020), however this effect is not universal (Fox et al 2003;Yilmaz et al 2008;Krishna et al 2012). Age-dependent declines in parental gamete quality (Monaghan & Metcalfe 2019) and declines in parental care (Hammers et al 2021) are predicted to cause reduced fitness in offspring of elderly parents. Indeed, there is increasing evidence in wild populations that elderly parents produce offspring with lower birth weights, reduced neonatal survival and lower recruitment rates (Hadley et al 2006;Descamps et al 2008;Nussey et al 2009;Hoffman et al 2010;Hayward et al 2015;Fay et al 2016;Hammers et al 2021).…”
