Abstract: Bony fishes (Teleostei) play an important role in the completion of life cycles of helminth parasites in the Antarctica. These fishes may be definitive, second intermediate or paratenic hosts of the helminths. The most species-rich taxon is Digenea. Virtually all of these digeneans use teleosts as definitive hosts. Only one species, Otodistomum cestoides, occurs as the adult stage in skates (Chondrichthyes), with teleosts as its second intermediate host. Among 14 cestode species maturing in fishes only one, Pa… Show more

“…Walter et al 2002). Rocka (2006) summarized the available information on the life cycle biology, specificity, and geographical distribution of the Digenea, Cestoda, Nematoda, and Acanthocephala of Antarctic bony fishes. The author stated that almost all helminth species maturing in Antarctic bony fishes are endemic, whereas only few are cosmopolitan or bipolar.…”

“…(Nototheniidae), may be heavily infected by a wide variety of larval forms of nematodes and cestodes (Wojciechowska 1993a,b, 1994, Orecchia et al 1994, Zdzitowiecki 2001, Laskowski & Zdzitowiecki 2005, Mattiucci & Nascetti 2008. Prevalences of the nematode Contracaecum osculatum species complex (which mature in marine mammals), diphyllobothridean cestodes (which mature in birds and marine mammals) and tetraphyllidean cestodes (which mature in sharks and skates) may reach 100%, with an intensity of hundreds of individuals per fish (Wojciechowska 1993a, Rocka 2003, 2006, Mattiucci & Nascetti 2008.…”

“…Although nothing is known about its life cycle, adult samples have been recorded in definitive hosts not only in a diverse variety of definitive hosts, but also within a vast distributional range (Bray and MacKenzie 1990). In spite of the fact that E. oatesi has been recorded in several teleosts from different geographical areas, this species is not considered as a cosmopolitan (Rocka 2006). The pronounced differences in abundance and dominance between L. cristatum and the other three species described here and the absence of any association between the species might be due to the fact that each digenean species chooses different intermediate host species or because each digenean species uses its host species in a different way.…”
