Heat transfer enhancement of circular and square LED geometry

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this paper is to compare the thermal effect between square and circular geometry of light emitting diode (LED) with respect of the same surface for the intent of reducing the junction temperature. Design/methodology/approach The heat equation is presented in a dimensionless form. To solve it numerically subject to the boundary conditions, the authors realized a three-dimensional code with Comsol Multiphysics. Findings The model is validated with previously published works. “…So, due to this advantages of LED lamps, many researchers focused on its improvements and optimizations. For instance, Ben Salah and Ben Hamida 5 , 6 investigated the heat transfer in LED geometries using air and PCM as alternative cooling materials. They also compared the results based on Ha and Graham 7 study for a chip-on-board packing of LED arrays with high power.…”

“…Without PCM : is the structure ameliorated in our previous work Ben Salah and Ben Hamida (2018) Where an increasing of the number of the fin was prosed and it shows a good result for improving the natural convection. As it showed in Figure 4 the same dimensions of base and length of fins was conserved.…”

“… The initial structure of our LED heat sink was presented in Figure 1 and it was studied by Ha and Graham (2012) 20 × 20 × 2 mm of the Aluminum base attached to four parallel plate fins having 1.5 mm of thickness and separated by three cavities with 4 mm width. Without PCM : is the structure ameliorated in our previous work Ben Salah and Ben Hamida (2018) Where an increasing of the number of the fin was prosed and it shows a good result for improving the natural convection.
