Abstract: Supine heart rate variability (HRV) and autonomic tests were carried to determine whether autonomic activity was affected in HIV positive patients. The pressor response following handgrip and cold pressor test was blunted in HIV+ patients, and the degree of dysfunction correlated with CD4 cell counts. The extent of autonomic impairment was mild and subclinical.

“…Considering that the majority of male patients were also severely immunodepressed, it could be that the further the disease advances, the more likely the symptoms of autonomic dysfunction. However, no statistical correlation was found between autonomic symptom scores and immune status (CD4 counts), as it was recently observed also by Sakhuja et al [23]. Thus, immunology does not seem to be related to autonomic function (Fig.…”

“…The patients with higher autonomic symptoms scores did not show worse autonomic variables. A similar lack of correlation between autonomic symptoms and the autonomic reflex testing was observed by Low et al in patients with type two diabetes mellitus [11] and by Sakhuja et al [23] in HIV-positive Indian patients.…”

“…A diminished autonomic profile is evident in HIVpositive individuals [12,23,24,47,48,57]. Although the relevant pathophysiologic mechanisms in HIVpositive patients are not fully elucidated, hyperchronic levels of sympathetic activity is often evident.…”

“…Autonomic symptoms however are often in other HIV-neuropathies, for instance HIV-SN. Studies investigating autonomic functions in HIVinfected patients describe different in part contrary results [75][76][77][78][79], which urges the need for larger RCT´s.…”
