Hearing rehabilitation in congenital aural atresia using the bone-anchored hearing aid: audiological and satisfaction results

Abstract: After a mean follow-up period of 6.5 years, 15 patients were still using their device. Each patient had an average improvement of 33 ± 7 dB. Closure of the ABG within 15 dB of the preoperative bone-conduction thresholds occurred in 10 patients. Adverse skin reactions appeared in 50% of patients over 6.5 years of follow-up. Eleven of the 12 patients used their BAHA for more than 8 h per day.

“…The 24 dB HL free-field PTA with Baha in the 23 children is similar to the results of other pediatric series [14]. The hearing gain provided by Baha in our TC patients (39 dB HL on average) is confirmed to be significantly higher than the gain provided by conventional bone-conduction hearing aids and appears to be even higher than the gain reported by other retrospective studies which include mainly non syndromic subjects [14,15].…”

“…The mean hearing gain obtained 44.9 AE 5.3 dB [CI 95%: (33.8-55.9)] at 6 months and 43.3 AE 5.2 dB [CI 95%: (32. 2-54.3)] at one year is similar to the values encountered through the literature [5,17] and appeared to be stable over time as well, considering our one year follow up.…”

“…Direct comparison of results obtained in this series with other reports is problematic, owing to the remarkable heterogeneity of previously published series. Nonetheless, the functional results obtained by our patients confirm that the hearing gain with BAHA is significantly greater than the gain achieved with conventional BC-hearing aids regardless of the etiology of hearing loss, consistent with recent reports [14,15].…”
