“…These figures, together with the approximate 4,000 infants born with severe bilateral hearing loss annually in the United States (National Institutes of Deafness and Other Communicative Disorders, 19931, could represent almost one third of all children under 5 years of age who either are born with or acquire severe hearing impairment each year. Antimicrobial Therapy Reports began appearing in the late 1970s questioning the effectiveness of ampicillin (a synthetic penicillin) and chloramphenicol, the antibiotics of choice at the time, in reducing the high frequency of neurologic residuals, particularly sensorineural hearing loss, after Haemophilus influenzae Type b meningitis (Lindberg, 1977;Raivio & Koskiiemi, 1978). Concern over the failure of conventional antibiotic therapy together with reports of the appearance of strains of Hib resistent to ampicillin and/or chloramphenicol prompted searches for alternative therapies; among them, the newer cephalosporin broad spectrum antibiotics (cefuroxime, ceftriaxome, and cefotaxime) resistant to the enzyme which converts penicillin into an inactive product (beta-lactamase).…”
