Abstract: Abortion-related mortality and morbidity result in significant health system costs. Approximately 42 million induced abortions occur around the world each year, 1 of which an estimated 22 million are conducted under unsafe conditions-that is, by an unqualified provider, in unsanitary conditions or both. 2 At least 65,000 women die annually from complications of unsafe abortion, and close to five million suffer temporary or permanent disability. 3 A recent analysis suggests that in Africa and Latin America, the… Show more

“…In Bangladesh, induced abortion is illegal except to save the life of the woman, but menstrual regulation (MR) is a legal uterine evacuation procedure performed using surgical or medication inducedabortion methods to establish non-pregnancy up to 10 weeks from an individual's last menstrual period. 6 Post-abortion care (PAC) is also widely available in Bangladesh to treat incomplete abortion resulting from induced or spontaneous abortion. 7 Constraints to women's reproductive autonomy can be considered at multiple levels, including individual perceptions and family factors that affect access to contraception.…”

“…For example, a maternal health voucher scheme provides financial incentives to service providers and mothers for providing and using selected services. Family planning represents a key strategy that is perceived to have contributed to the reduction in maternal mortality in Bangladesh, which is regarded as a model country through its family‐planning activities since 1975 and its menstrual regulation program since the 1980s [12].…”

“…A recent study from Bangladesh suggested that providing women with life‐saving treatment for abortion‐related complications costs the health sector US $1.6 million annually in incremental costs alone. The analysis also showed wide variations in incremental health system costs of providing care for moderate abortion complications – referring to those requiring uterine evacuation but no other surgical care – from US $10 at the primary care level to US $50 at the tertiary care level [14]. The present study used data from the same cost of abortion care dataset to identify the varying strategies of care for abortion‐related complications actually in place in Bangladesh and assessed the costs associated with each, with the aim of identifying means of making care for abortion‐related complications both more cost‐efficient for the health system and higher quality for the patient.…”

“…Methods for unsafe abortion range from insertion of objects into the reproductive tract, to ingestion of pharmaceutical and homeopathic medications, to use of vacuum aspiration or D&C equipment by informally trained providers. Approximately 70 000 women annually are estimated to present to hospitals and clinics with abortion‐related complications [14,15].…”
