HBV Viral Load and Liver Enzyme Levels May Be Associated with the Wild MBL2 AA Genotype

Abstract: The present study investigated the frequencies of rs1800450 (MBL ⁎B, G>A), rs1800451 (MBL ⁎C, G>A), and rs5030737 (MBL ⁎D, C>T) polymorphisms in exon 1 of the MBL2 gene among patients with chronic viral hepatitis. Blood samples from patients infected with hepatitis B virus (HBV; n = 65), hepatitis C virus (HCV; n = 92), and a noninfected control group (n = 300) were investigated. The presence of polymorphisms was detected using a real-time polymerase chain reaction to correlate with liver disease pathogenesis … Show more

“…From a metanalysis including 17 studies, of which two were Brazilian ( 46 , 47 ), the authors concluded that exon 1 variants leading to MBL deficiency (p.Gly54Asp, rs1800450; p.Gly57Glu, rs1800451, and p.Arg52Cys, rs5030737; known as B, C , and D variants and collectively named as O variants) have a dominant effect on the susceptibility to severe hepatitis B or liver cirrhosis, but not to chronic hepatitis B and hepatocellular carcinoma ( 48 ). In another Brazilian study, patients with active HBV infection and homozygous for the fully functional exon 1 MBL A variants presented a positive correlation between increased transaminase and HBV DNA levels and the presence of mild to moderate fibrosis ( 49 ).…”

“…In the investigation of the main SNP in the MBL gene, patients with active HBV who had wildtype AA genotype had a positive correlation between increased levels of transaminases, HBV DNA and the presence of mild to moderate fibrosis [ 147 ]. Mutations in the FoxP3 gene, SNP-924 A > G, showed that G carrier status was associated with altered viral loads and liver enzyme levels in patients with chronic active hepatitis B (CHB-A) with inflammation and fibrosis.…”
