Harnessing the Antibacterial Properties of Fluoridated Chitosan Polymers against Oral Biofilms

Abstract: Dental caries are a worldwide endemic chronic disease affecting people of all ages. Due to the limitations of daily used oral hygiene products, there is an unmet need for new, effective, safe, and economic oral products. We have recently demonstrated that N-(2(2,6-diaminohexanamide)-chitosan (CS3H Lys) has enhanced antibacterial properties against Streptococcus mutans, the main cariogenic bacterium, and here we investigated the effect of fluoridation of this polymer (CS3H Lys F) on its antibacterial properties… Show more

“…The use of injectable or hand-moldable hydrogels should be a clinically practical approach [1,2], especially in structurally complex tissue defects such as osteoarthritis and periodontal pockets [7,10]. Although topical antibiotics are an ideal way to treat infections, effectively reducing drug doses and achieving adequate concentrations in areas of bacterial infection, the challenges posed by drug resistance remains unresolved [43,44]. In this study, different ratios of mucoadhesive methacrylated chitosan and bioactive gelatin were prepared, after which three phenolic compounds (TA, GA, and PG) were added to the hybrid hydrogel.…”

“…Fluorinated chitosan has a comparable effect to sodium fluoride but contains less fluoride ions, suggesting that it can reduce the dosage of fluoride required for treatment. It also has higher antibacterial activity and very low cytotoxicity (Rahayu et al, 2022).…”
