Hardware Implementation Aspects of New Low Complexity Image Coding Algorithm for Wireless Capsule Endoscopy

Abstract: Abstract. The paper presents hardware implementation aspects of new efficient image compression algorithm designed for wireless capsule endoscopy with Bayer color filter array (CFA). Since power limitation, small size conditions and specific image data format (CFA) exclude application of traditional image compression techniques dedicated ones are necessary. Discussed algorithm is based on integer version of discrete cosine transform (DCT). Therefore it has low complexity and power consumption. It is demonstrat… Show more

“…For active robotic capsules that may be teleoperated by a surgeon, it is expected that frame rates of 20 fps or more will be required (turgis and Puers, 2005). Several researchers have worked on developing efficient compression algorithms and low-power compression chips (Lin et al, 2006;turcza et al, 2008;turgis and Puers, 2005). toward addressing power consumption, chen et al (2009) developed a system that can reduce average power consumption by 45% using a power efficient image compression module, a power management unit, and a novel wireless wake-up subsystem with zero stand-by current.…”

“…When compressing images, it is also important to conserve memory allocation that requires space onboard the capsule [51]. One approach that specifically addresses this uses a Bayer colour filter array to achieve performance comparable to a more complex wavelet-based coder, while maintaining low power consumption [53].…”

“…Current JPEG compression chips require the availability of a considerable amount of hardware resources resulting in a high power consumption (typically more than 100 mW), which is not acceptable in this application [13]. Among simple dedicated algorithms, we chose the low-complexity compression engine developed by [14] because its performances are comparable with JPEG2000, but lowering the complexity allowing its implementation on the chosen FPGA.…”

“…Several compressors were tested [13,19] taking into account the power limitation and small size conditions which are the main features of WCE. For these reasons, a low-power, low-complexity lossy compressor specifically developed for capsule endoscopy was chosen [14]. The implemented compressor is based on integer version of discrete cosine transform (DCT) and performs sequentially four operations: color transformation, image transformation, coefficients quantization and entropy coding.…”
