Los peruanos celebran el año 1821 por la proclamación de la independencia del Perú, pero no recuerdan que este evento fue consecuencia de un sitio militar de diez meses, impuesto por el Ejército Libertador dirigido por el general José de San Martín. El presente artículo describe ese acontecimiento a través del análisis de cartas, memorias, impresos y actas del cabildo, mostrando el uso del hambre como estrategia militar, así como la experiencia sensorial y emocional que sufrió la población sitiada. Se concluye que Lima experimentó una transición traumática del virreinato a la república sin haberse producido batallas sangrientas entre los ejércitos realista y patriota.
