Habitual physical exercise has beneficial effects on telomere length in postmenopausal women

Abstract: Habitual physical exercise is associated with greater telomere length in postmenopausal women. This finding suggests that habitual physical exercise in postmenopausal women may reduce telomere attrition.

“…Given the observed shifts in substrate oxidation in the present study with a relatively small sample size, it would be of interest to investigate the manipulation of CHOs in pre-exercise feeding in addition to supplementation during exercise. It is yet to be determined what effect this would have on self-selected exercise, however the current study looked to replicate recommended habitual submaximal fixed-duration exercise in females [54].…”

“…34,35). In addition, metabolic biochemical stress, such as states of insulin resistance or low adiponectin, is associated with shorter telomere length (36,37). Targeting the comorbidity between psychologic stress and metabolic stress might be more powerful than reducing them individually, as they are often interdependent (31).…”

“…Exercise may be one of the important factors shaping apparent or actual lengthening, as it is related to greater numbers of na€ ve cells as well as longer telomere length (36,46). Increasing well-being through dampening stress and concomitant increases in growth and restorative factors might induce a specific pattern of adhesion molecule-stimulated trafficking patterns and result in cells with longer telomeres-either more na€ ve cells or fewer senescent cells.…”
