Habitat partitioning by juvenile fishes in a temperate estuarine nursery, South Africa

Abstract: Summary:Multiple habitats were investigated in a known fish nursery area to further understand habitat partitioning among juveniles in the lower reaches of the warm temperate, permanently open Swartkops Estuary, South Africa. Fishes were collected using a 30-m seine net with a mesh size of 10 mm in sand, mud, creek and vegetated habitat types. Each habitat type was sampled in two locations twice per season from February 2013 to January 2014. Shallow-water creeks and vegetated habitats with coverage of Zostera … Show more

“…In an ecological context, the results of this study indicate that R. holubi juveniles are resilient to hypersaline conditions, enabling them to persist in a saline-tolerant food web. Juvenile R. holubi depend on vegetated refugia for food and protection from piscivores (Blaber 1974a, Edworthy and Strydom 2016, Nel et al 2017. This refuge is particularly important if mobility is reduced, due to the potential reduction in activity and fin erosion seen in this study.…”

“…Larvae and small juveniles of R. holubi migrate into estuaries at a size of less than 30 mm and grow for about a year and a half to over 140 mm before migrating back to the ocean to spawn (Whitfield 1998, Götz andCowley 2013). Juvenile R. holubi are usually highly resident, preferring to stay within habitats such as Zostera capensis seagrass beds within the estuary (Edworthy and Strydom 2016, Muller and Strydom 2017. R. holubi is a strong osmoregulator able to maintain its internal osmotic environment up to 65 (Blaber 1973a(Blaber , 1974b.…”

“…Early juveniles of most estuary‐associated marine fish taxa take up residence seasonally in nursery habitats, mainly between early spring and late summer (Able & Fahay, 2010; Edworthy & Strydom, 2016; Whitfield, 2019). Following ingress, these juveniles may migrate considerable distances up estuaries, even in the absence of tidal conditions.…”

“…Shapes the period that the population must feed to prepare spawning and non-feeding period. May be associated with ''weak'' period (bad condition) after spawning (Dutil, 1986;Engelhard & Heino, 2005) May shape feeding interactions and trophic links within the community seasonally, both as a result of preying on eggs and larvae and, secondarily, because of the seasonal pattern of recruitment (Edworthy & Strydom, 2016) Is affected by suitability of the environmental conditions for eggs & larvae. Is affected by energy supply (low energy may result in delay or skipping spawning).…”
