“…If no other macrophytes establish during the senescence of P. crispus the water may become dominated by phytoplankton and risks being shifted into a turbid state. This might further impair benthic food webs, a key pathway in shallow water bodies, which has largely been ignored (Puche et al, 2021; Vadeboncoeur et al, 2003).…”

“…Both phytoplankton and zooplankton samples were taken with a sampler from the shores at a depth of approximately 25 cm. We include in our "plankton" analyses all the species found in the samples collected from the water column, including the benthic organisms (which were also present in these kinds of samples since the wetland is a shallow habitat with vegetation) because they are a relevant part of the aquatic network (Rojo et al 2017;Puche et al 2021). Phytoplankton samples were xed with lugol; individuals of each population were taxonomically identi ed, classi ed, counted and measured to obtain body-size (µm 3 ) as well as population and total biovolume (mm 3 /l; Rodrigo and Segura 2020).…”

“…Furthermore, inside the CWs, vegetation and the proximity of the sediment contributed, along with benthic biota, to the community found in the water column. This combination allows a very effective plankton-benthos network to be established in which benthic organisms play a central role in spreading the effects of disturbances to the community (Puche et al 2021). In conclusion, we have seen how CWs with different features have been bene cial to the environment by improving the plankton communities.…”
