In adult tissues, anion secretion in response to STa or to guanylin or uroguanylin, the endogenous ligands for the receptor that is activated by STa, has been shown to be dependent on CFTR activity (33)(34)(35)(36)(37) and to be inhibited by bumetanide (35). It is possible that the differences observed between the Ussing chamber and suckling mouse assays are related to the age of the animals, with NKCC1 contributing little to electrolyte uptake needed for stimulated secretion in the 4 -5-day-old mouse but contributing significantly to this process in the adult.…”
