Gualou Xiebai decoction inhibits cardiac dysfunction and inflammation in cardiac fibrosis rats

Abstract: BackgroundGualou Xiebai Decoction (GXD) is a well-known traditional Chinese recipe. It has been used to treat cardiovascular disorders for nearly two thousand years. But there is a lack of reports on cardiac fibrosis and underlying mechanism.MethodsMyocardial infarction was performed by ligation of left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) in male Wistar rats. On the other hand, we did not find any change in heart rate in rats after myocardial injury by I/R challenge, nor effect of GLXB on the heart rate either, which is inconsistent with the results by Ding and colleagues reporting that a deceased heart rate was observed in rats with myocardial infarction caused by ligation and subsequent release of the LADCA, while pretreatment with GLXB for 4 weeks prevented the decrease in the heart rate (Ding et al, 2016 ). A possible reason for this difference may be that arrhythmia occurs mostly in the early stage of reperfusion (Sun et al, 2014 ), while our study detected the heart rate at 90 min after reperfusion, missing the time window for finding the effect of GLXB on heart rate.…”

“…GLXB herb pair consists of the dried fruit of Trichosanthes kirilowii Maxim (Chinese name Gualou) and the dried bulbs of Allium macrostemon Bunge (Chinese name Xiebai) in a weight ratio of 2:1 ( Ding et al, 2016 ). The combination use of Gualou and Xiebai with the ratio of 2:1 was first proposed by Zhang Zhongjing (in the Eastern Han Dynasty, third century China) in the treatise “Jin Kui Yao Lue,” which was verified as the best ratio after a long period of clinical application ( Zhang W.
