Growth of Australian shortfin eel (Anguilla australis) elvers given different dietary protein and lipid levels

Abstract: The Australian short®n eel, Anguilla australis is a potential candidate for intensive aquaculture. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the growth of elvers (5.4 g 0.1 initial weight) fed with diets of varying protein and lipid content, and to assess the potential of using soya-bean meal as a dietary ingredient. A 10 week experiment was conducted at 24 (1.0)°C by rearing ®sh, in 60 L conical ®bre glass tanks using a closed recirculation system. Diets having protein concentrations of 40 or 50% (by dry w… Show more

“…The SGR of shortfin and longfin glass eels observed in the current experiments were similar to those reported for other Anguillid species reared under laboratory conditions (Kamstra & Heinsbroek 1991; De Silva, Gunasekera, Gooley & Ingram 2001a; De Silvia, Gunasekera, Ingram & Dobson 2001b; Ingram et al 2001; Rodriguez et al 2005). Growth rate variability in Anguillids is well documented (Wickins 1985; Jellyman 1997; Ingram et al 2001) and remains an underlying issue facing eel aquaculturists.…”
