Growth data from birth to one year of age on 120 Beetal goats, 30 animals on each farm, including Livestock Experiment Station (LES) Rakh Kheirewala, LES Rakh Ghulaman, LES Alladad and LPRI Bahadurnagar, Okara, Pakistan, were recorded and analysed for estimating growth curve parameters: predicted live weight, »a«, turning point of growth, »b« and rate of growth »k« by using Brody and Gompertz mathematical functions employing non-linear regression models. Estimates of the growth curve parameters »a«, »b« and »k« were 29.1, 0.916 and 0.108 for Brody and 23.4, 1.984 and 0.258 for Gompertz functions, respectively. The corresponding values of determination coefficient and mean absolute deviation for these models were 99.8 and 99.8 percent and 0.0061 and 0.0050, respectively. Flock significantly affected parameter »b« of Brody and Gompertz models. Sex did not affect any of the parameters in both models. Type of birth was a significant source of variation for parameter »b« in the Brody model. The determination coefficient showed that both the models efficiently explained the growth of Beetal kids.

SummaryBackground: Katahdin breed sheep is highly disseminated in Mexico. This breed and its crosses have recently gained attention among sheep producers. However, research with crosses between Katahdin and other meat breeds is limited. Objective: to evaluate the genetic and non-genetic factors affecting growth and mortality rate of crossbred lambs from Katahdin ewes fecundated with breeds specialized for meat production. Methods: crossbred lambs (n = 152) from Katahdin ewes sired with Hampshire (KH; n = 43), Texel (KT; n = 53) or Charolais (KCH; n = 56) were evaluated under intensive management conditions. The effects of genotype and non-genetic factors on birth weight, weaning weight, pre-weaning daily weight gain, and mortality rate were determined. Results: breed differences were not detected for birth weight (4 ± 1.1, 4.3 ± 0.9 and 4 ± 1.1 Kg for KCH, KH, KT, respectively), nor for the 60-d weaning weight (20.2 ± 4.3, 20.9 ± 4.3, 18.2 ± 4.2 Kg for KCH, KH, KT, respectively). Weight of lambs did not differ significantly between sexes, but it decreased (p<0.05) with increased litter size (weaning weight at 60 days for single, twins and triplets was 24.5 ± 2.6, 19.2 ± 3.5, and 14.3 ± 3.8 Kg, respectively). Pre-weaning mortality of KH lambs was 13.3% and it was significantly lower than that of the other genotypes (24.5 and 39.3% for KT and KCH, respectively). Conclusion: inclusion of Charolais, Hampshire or Texel rams in Katahdin flocks results in similar lamb weaning weight, but Hampshire-sired progeny excels regarding pre-weaning survival.

SUMMARYThe objective of this study was to evaluate the nonlinear models that best describe the growth curve of ram lambs Ile de France created in intensive system in the state of Paraná. Therefore, there were weighed fortnightly during the period from February 2013 to June 2013, from birth to slaughter (120 days) of 31 Ile de France ram lambs. Growth curves were obtained by nonlinear models Brody, Von Bertalanffy, Gompertz and Logistic in which parameters were considered maturation rate (K), asymptotic weight (A), age of the animal (t) is given by integration determining the proportion of growth after birth (B) and the proportion of asymptotic value at which the inflection point occurs curve (m) in accordance with the adopted model. The parameters were estimated by Marquardt applied to the NLIN procedure of SAS statistical program and the criteria used to verify the accuracy of the fit of the curves were the mean square of the coefficient of determination. The Brody, Von Bertalanffy, Gompertz and Logistic resulted respectively in 26. 4579; 26.1668; 26.136; 26.1582 for the mean square and 0.813; 0.958; 0.958; 0.958 for the coefficient of determination. Considering the criteria assumed the Gompertz model, followed by Logistic and Von Bertalanffy, presented the best fit to describe the growth of Ile de France ram lambs.
