Abstract: Four virulent strains of Venezuelan encephalitis virus attained higher concentrations of infectious virus in bloods of adult hamsters than two benign strains when given subcutaneously. One benign virus, the attenuated TC83 vaccine strain, reached higher concentrations in bone marrow and Peyer's patches than virulent subtype I strains, and another benign virus, subtype IV, grew to lower levels. When inoculated intracranially, the two benign viruses attained high concentrations in brain, but did not significantl… Show more

“…This virus has a smaller plaque size and a higher affinity for hydroxyapatite than the parental TD strain (24) and absorbs better to BHK cells (55). TC-83 is cleared rapidly from the plasma after intravenous injection, unlike TD (26). After subcutaneous injection, TC-83 replicates more slowly than virulent VEE but eventually reaches slightly higher titers in the bone marrow and lymph nodes.…”

“…Clearance of virus may be an important determinant of viral virulence, since artificial blockade of the reticuloendothelial system with silica beads increased the lethality of the 17-D vaccine strain of yellow fever virus (12) and of coxsackievirus B3 for mice (8). Thorotrast has also been shown to decrease the rate at which Semliki forest virus is cleared from mouse plasma (6), and preliminary evidence has been reported (5) which indicates that hamsters pretreated with Thorotrast are less resistant than normal hamsters to the lethality of TC-83 virus infection.…”

“…Hamsters were inoculated subcutaneously (sc) over the back with 1,000 PFU of virus in 0.2 ml of BA/H. Heparinized plasma and organ suspensions were obtained from inoculated hamsters as described previously (5). For platelet counts, heparinized blood was diluted 1:100 with Unopettes (no.…”
